I'm in a local high school, and walk past a young lady I’ve seen before.
I tell her, "I like your blouse."
I get a smile and a thank you. Not suspicious, not enthusiastic. Somewhere in between. I do like her blouse. It’s colorful, with it’s green/blue/turquoise thing going for it. A great pattern too.
I feel good telling her that I like her blouse. Then I move on.
I see a 16 year male I know wearing a shirt and tie. He’s dressed up because the football coach told them to dress that way before the game tonight. He’s a little wrinkled, but it was obviously something he isn’t used to.
It’s a good combo though, the wrinkles notwithstanding. And he looks good wearing it.
So I tell him. In fact I tell him he could pass for a teacher.
I get a big grin in return. THAT he liked.
Later on I see a young woman wearing a killer outfit. High heels, panty hose, skirt to mid thigh, silk blouse. Dark colors. Looks like she’s going to a job interview.
The boys were no doubt drooling over this young lady all day. But if that’s what she was going for she’d be wearing the low cut top so many other ladies of her age group put on.
I ask her if she’s going for a job interview. Turns out she is. I tell her she looks very professional.
I get a look of utter appreciation. FINALLY…the validation she was after!
What’s happening here?
I stepped outside my own head for a while and saw things from the point of view of others. I looked for something to appreciate in them and communicated it when I found it.
I put it in a context that meant something to them. People want to be recognized for the effort they make…and the results.
And when you do you’ll lift them up.
And when you lift them up, you lift yourself up in the process. Your energy becomes attractive, almost irresistible.
This takes very little effort for most of us.
The rewards? HUGE!
Businesses skyrocket. Relationships get better. TV remote controls get passed into your hands. Popcorn is made for you. Seats are saved. The list goes on forever!
Find someone’s blouse to like. Or their shoes. Or their wrinkled shirt. Or their smile.
Watch what happens….to them and you.
